September 11th DVD Collection

9/11 (2002)

On the morning of September 11, 2001, brothers Jules and Gedeon Naudet were working on a documentary about a rookie New York City firefighter. Hearing a roar in the sky, Jules turned his camera upward -- just in time to film the only existing image of the first plane crashing into the World Trade Center. In a fateful instant, Jules and Gedeon became eyewitnesses to the most shocking and defining moment of our time. With cameras rolling, the Naudets followed NYC firefighters into the heart of what would be known as Ground Zero. What emerged is an unforgettably powerful visual document and a stirring tribute to real-life heroes who, in their city's darkest hour, rose to extraordinary acts of courage and compassion.

In Memoriam - New York City 9/11/01 (2002)

Of the several TV documentaries on the World Trade Center disaster, HBO's In Memoriam: September 11, 2001 is one of the most compelling, simply because it largely dispenses with post-production "sweetening" and allows the eyewitnesses of the tragedy to tell the story through their own words and deeds. Working in concert with 16 different news agencies, the producers have assembled 62 minutes of never-before-seen footage (much of it culled from amateur videos), together with the input of 118 "regular" New Yorkers who comment upon the visuals -- sometimes at the very moment that they're occurring. Among those interviewed are former New York mayor Rudy Giulliani, whose on-the-scene reaction when he sees several unfortunates jumping to their deaths from the burning Twin Towers may well be the most heartbreaking vignette ever captured on camera. Also seen and heard are NYPD commissioner Bernard Kerik, NYFD commissioner Thomas Von Essen, and Giulliani's executive assistant Beth Petrone, who lost her husband in the attack.

This is a documentary which looks and the engineering, design, and construction innovations that helped to make the construction of the WTC towers possible, and how these same virtues could have become deadly flaws in the wake of the attack.

WTC - The First 24 Hours (2002)

Beginning with a horrifying image of the North Tower on fire and ending with the haunting pictures of a debris-covered Lower Manhattan the day after, The First 24 Hours documents "ground zero" in the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 with raw and powerful honesty. Intentionally devoid of any commentary or music, the images speak for themselves. The smoldering monochromatic site. The desolate and solitary streets. The ashen outskirts of New York's once-bustling financial center. A moonscape of haunting, Dresdenesque remains. Shot independently over a 24-hour period, the film not only bears witness to the terrible attack, but also offers an intimate portrait of the incredible humanity that sprung from it.
